Sandstones

Sandstones (sometimes known as arenite) are sedimentary rocks composed mainly of sand-sized minerals. The rock grains occur in several compositions, depending on the place of origin. Quartz is one of the most common minerals in sandstones and, besides, it is among the most erosion resistant grains. These rock grains are bound to each other by a cement which is usually calcium carbonate, silica or iron oxide. The material connecting the sediment particles usually is known as matrix, which turns into cement at the moment of its crystallization.

Application:
Sandstone is easy to work, yet good looking. This makes it a common building material. It is suitable especially for interior design, but some stones, if quite thick, can be used on the outside. They usually cannot be easily polished because of their softness.

Finishes:
The surface can be smooth, sandblasted, antiqued and bush-hummered.
